New Article on Graduate School and Staying or Leaving

Please check out my new article that's up on the website of the CUNY Advocate. It raises questions about graduate school and presents current students with some questions that might help them determine whether the academic path is the right one for them. Feel free to distribute widely and wildly!

Having bailed from a PhD program myself, your essay resonated for me. I loved teaching, and I was midway in the enjoying reading theory spectrum, but the giving up creativity killed me. The other English PhD students reminded me of nothing so much as monks, rising each day to spend it praising the name of Derrida, or Zizek, or whatever theorist they had sworn allegiance to, and that existence didn't seem to leave a lot of room for actual living and making things. Thanks for posting that.
Ah-ha!

Ahoy, fellow phd dropout.

I jumped ship from a PhD program in comp lit, and was glad I did. As good as some of it was, it still felt like penance. Cat has it right: giving up making things was a killer.
I feel like you can stay in for a while and learn enough and then move on with your life. The frequency with which one really encounters new ideas tapers off after the first year or two.
